5 Dental Hygiene Care You
Should Know About

One of the first things you notice about people is their smile and their confidence. It gives an idea of who they really are and what they’re truly about. A popular saying goes ‘You are addressed the way you are dressed’ and there’s a follow up saying that goes ‘You’re not fully dressed without a smile’. To complete that stylish look and beautiful aura, we’re going to tell you about five dental hygiene tips you should know

  1. Don’t Rinse
We often end our teeth brushing routine with rinsing out our mouth with water. However, that is not essentially the best practice. It is better to spit out after brushing but not rinse with water, allowing the fluoride to continue action on the teeth. Rinsing out dilutes the effect that the fluoride can have in cleaning the teeth and protecting the enamel. You may find this off at first but with time you will get used to it. The result will be longer lasting fresh breath and better dental care.
  2. Use mouthwash and floss regularly
Flossing helps remove food particles stuck between your teeth when you’ve had a meal or a snack. It also helps the gums to breathe and maintain their state of health. Using mouthwash has been shown to reduce the level of accumulation of plaque that could lead to bad breath. So, you can use your mouthwash as an icing on a delicious cake of good hygiene to complete that dazzling smile.
  3. Don’t forget your tongue
Most times when brushing, we tend to forget about our tongue and focus mainly on the teeth, but the tongue is what’s usually responsible for bad breath. So clean your tongue properly, especially the back of your tongue with a soft brush or a tongue cleaner.
  4. Avoid bad foods
There are some types of food that are not teeth friendly and too much exposure to them will cause harm to the teeth. Examples are food high in phosphorus levels such as beans and eggs. High concentrations of phosphorus will reduce the calcium production and thereby reduce the strength of the teeth. Another example is acidic foods like oranges and pineapples and other foods rich in acid. Consuming too much of these foods will cause erosion of the enamel and then dentine exposure which is what happens when you feel a shocking sensation when you take hot or cold drinks. Also, rinse your mouth after each meal. It helps reduce the effect these foods may have on your mouth after consumption
  5. Visit your dentist twice a year
This cannot be overemphasized. It’s no secret that the people with the brightest smiles have the best dentists. Regular dental visits to the dental clinic will greatly improve your health and hygiene. As much as your health is in your hands, you still need professional cleaning done twice a year. The procedure is called scaling and polishing and it helps remove plaque and calculus from the teeth before it leads to decay and eventual loss of teeth. Your dentist will also give you more tips on how to improve and maintain your hygiene (they’ll tell you some trade secrets)

These 5 tips are guaranteed to keep your smile in check and leave you brimming with confidence that comes from a healthy dentition. A bonus tip: remember to change your toothbrush after three months or when you notice the bristles have started bending or coming off. Whichever comes first.
